Hydrotherapy is great for children who are aiming to build strength, increase flexibility, manage pain, and/or improve endurance. Buoyancy allows kids to practice their mobility and skills with more independence. This is based on the Archimedes principal which simply means that “the buoyant force on an object equals the weight of the fluid it displaces”. Hydrotherapy programs are carefully devised and are all based on the Archimedes principal. For example, some kids cannot walk on land by themselves, but they can in water! Warm water also helps kids to stretch their muscles and manage discomfort during exercise to make exercising easier.
Ask your physiotherapist how hydrotherapy can support your child's development.
Extensive research into hydrotherapy has demonstrated that there are many benefits. The anti-gravity effects of water allows movement to be easier and more fluid compared to on land. It also reduces the load placed on joints. The warm temperature of a hydrotherapy pool also promotes muscle relaxation allowing for increased range of motion and decreased spasticity.
Hydrotherapy programs comprise of specific techniques in which physiotherapist’s are trained to devise programs to individual clients. Our physiotherapists are experts in hydrotherapy and are able to adapt exercise to your child while in the pool.
